Center for Art and Dance

Adaptive reuse of former school into interdisciplinary center for art and dance at Bowdoin College

Cambridge Seven Associates transformed the former Longfellow Elementary School into a highly visible, easily accessible center for the visual arts and dance at Bowdoin College. The Robert H. and Blythe Bickel Edwards Center for Art and Dance is a unique repurposed space featuring painting and drawing studios, two dance studios, a photography lab and darkroom, classrooms, critique spaces for student exhibition as well as a state-of-the-art digital media lab, all in a single campus location. Studios and dedicated instructional spaces for printmaking, sculpture, drawing and photography surround the central digital media space on the first floor, providing a lively interdisciplinary environment. A new dance studio and prep space on the second floor enables traditional performance art to engage with modern media.
