Gloucester HarborWalk

Design of harbor walk featuring interactive markers and wayfinding

Cambridge Seven designed a series of 42 story markers and wayfinding maps that lead visitors around the Gloucester HarborWalk and educate them about the rich artistic, industrial and historical heritage of America’s oldest seaport. The mile and half long path takes visitors through the city’s working waterfront, cultural sites and downtown commercial district. Granite story markers connect the HarborWalk to existing museums, artifacts and interpretive sites while QR codes provide access to a deeper investigation as well as links to short interactive films, a walking cinema, available via smartphone and the web. The path’s palette draws on the native maritime and cultural materials of Cape Ann, employing wood boardwalks, granite and brick paving, wood light poles, and granite benches assembled from salvaged local stone. Native tree and perennial plantings enhance areas for teaching sustainability and hosting migratory birds and butterflies.
