New Visitor Center Introduces an Historic Estate
Maymont Visitor Center
Master planning and architectural design for nature and visitor center at historic site in Virginia
The Robins Nature and Visitor Center, designed by Cambridge Seven Associates with Bond Comet Westmoreland + Hiner, establishes a new entry to the 100-acre historic estate and park at Maymont. The 29,000-square-foot building's stepped gabled sheds allude to Virginia's vernacular architecture. Clerestory windows bring light into the interior spaces and diminish the height of the building's mass. The building is divided according to its three primary functions: Visitor Center, Nature Center, and Education wing. The Visitor Center includes an orientation space, exhibits on the mansion and outdoor attractions, and visitor amenities. The Nature Center provides hands-on environmental education for school children.
