Ring of Fire Aquarium

Master planning, architectural, and exhibit design for new waterfront aquarium in Osaka, Japan

Cambridge Seven Associates provided master planning, architecture, and exhibit design for Osaka, Japan’s new Ring of Fire waterfront aquarium and the adjacent Tempozan Marketplace. The aquarium presents the Pacific Ocean using the organizing metaphor of the Ring of Fire–a zone of volcanic and tectonic activity outlining the Pacific Basin. The bio-geographical plan of the building, with the Aleutians to the north, Antarctica to the south, and so on, allows the building to be clearly understood by its visitors. Blue exterior walls and red glass roof forms, crowned by glass skylights, further express the Ring of Fire. Cambridge Seven’s design for the aquarium was developed in collaboration with Environmental Development and Research.
